GP Basic: Just What Kpop Needs, or The End of Childhood?

August 10, 2010

I apologize in advance for rambling/potentially not making sense in this post: I blame cough medicine.

Dubbed “Korea’s youngest group,” the average age of all 6 GP Basic members is 14. Five members are in eighth grade and one is in sixth. Their company has said of their young age, “They have been building up dancing and singing skills for two years through training and boast a powerful teamwork. They are young in age but will show strong girl power that will threaten the stronghold of older girl groups.”

(MV teaser for their debut single, Game):

My opinion under the cut.

The way I see it, having such a young group could be a good or bad thing.

So far, female groups that do have very young members also have much older members (like f(x), After School and 2NE1). While some groups pull off the large age gap, having members at such different stages of life can be a bit tricky for a group. It’s hard to pull off a cohesive image when some members are in their mid-teens and others are in their mid-twenties. It ends up like this: either the youngest puts on a sexier or more mature image to fit in with her older group members, or the oldest puts on a younger, more cutesy image to fit in with the other group members.

But for GP Basic, since all the girls are young, it levels the playing field. Theoretically, no one has act or dress differently to fit in with the rest of the group. Granted, at such a young age even one year makes a big difference, and as a result the sixth grader does stand out as the youngest amongst the others. But they all look super young!

A young, fresh group like GP Basic could be a positive role model to younger kpop fans, who right now may look up to sexier groups like 4Minute. They can connect better with girls closer to their own age. If their company lets them actually act/appear their age, and does not try to “sexy” them up, they could potentially be a role model for young Korean girls—showing them it’s okay to be young! However, if they try to make them older than they actually are, this will just fuel the negative model that other groups have already created. Their mv teaser shows them with makeup, shorts, and heels, but it doesn’t seem that bad yet—they can still go either way.

The big irony is that most of the music shows advise viewers not to watch unless they are 15—so most of the members wouldn’t be able to watch the shows! And perhaps a lot of their fans wouldn’t be able to either. In addition, they will be performing next to some pretty sexy acts, which may affect the direction their company decides to steer them.

It’s a tricky situation! What do you all think?

I just hope they get fed.

    Nice overview.

Lol at I just hope they get fed.

Me, I personally like them. I haven’t seen Janey in heals but eightgraders can wear them. Yeah they might boost up there appearance and act like young little hos but if hey parents ok wit dat, then I’m ok.
